Working as a Relief worker in Carr Gomm’s Glasgow Service, by Rosemary Hamilton
My name is Rosemary; I retired a few years ago and then came back as a relief worker, as I missed the interaction with people we support and co-workers.
I enjoy my job as a relief worker because it brings me joy that the people we support enjoy my tea dances and other events like birthdays, Halloween, and Christmas. My husband enjoys playing Santa and giving the people supported a small Christmas gift. Organising these events gives the people supported something to look forward to.
I help plan the tea dances in Gorbals by picking what music and games are being played and bringing most of the food and drinks.
The people I support enjoy coming to these events for the latest gossip and a chat. Everyone has a great time.
Being a relief worker you must have empathy towards the people you support. I support a person who does not have much communication with her family so she depends on visits from staff. As a treat, I took her to Rothsay for the day. We travelled by bus and ferry, had lunch and walked along the beach. It was a beautiful day; we also looked in some shops and chatted with other people. This made the person supported feel better about herself and brought her joy. This is the most rewarding part of my job to see them smile.
